Marie Mitchell’s ‘Man’s Court Costume’, made with watercolor, graphite, and ink on paper, is all about the details. The colour palette is muted but precise. There is a real understanding of how to give texture and weight to the piece. Look at how the floral elements are meticulously rendered. It's almost like a scientific illustration, but there's a real love for the subject in the way she captures each flower. I mean, come on, the tiny white dots that make up the daisy-like trim are so carefully placed. The contrast between the dark, velvety feel of the coat and the light, airy lace of the jabot is wonderful. It reminds me a little of Charles Le Brun. He also had a way of combining observation and imagination, blending detail with overall composition. It’s a reminder that art isn't just about one thing; it's about seeing how many things can fit together, even if they don't seem to belong.
