This 1689 silver medal by Dutch artist Jan (I) Smeltzing commemorates William III and Mary II of England, who became joint monarchs following the Glorious Revolution. The medal features a bust of William III on one side and Mary II on the other, with each ruler's name and title inscribed around the edge. This small medal is an excellent example of the tradition of commemorative medals in 17th century Europe. The inscription reads "GULIELMUS III. D.G.M. BRITAN. ET. HIB. REX" and "MARIA D.G.M. BRITAN. ET. HIB. REGINA" which translates to William III, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain and Ireland and Maria, by the Grace of God, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland.
