What stands out to you as you look at it? Curator: What strikes me is the persistence of archetypes here. The egret, rendered in stark white against that hazy grey, carries echoes of purity and watchfulness, across cultures. Don't you feel a connection to older symbolic meanings when you look at this, meanings woven into our collective memory? Editor: Definitely. There is something almost mythic about the stark contrast, a sense of symbolic opposition. How much does that contrast play into Japanese visual traditions? Curator: The contrast is crucial. Think of ink painting, *sumi-e*, where shades of black conjure entire landscapes. Here, the negative space, the grey void, isn't empty. It's pregnant with meaning – a vast, unknowable background from which these precise figures emerge. It asks us to contemplate presence and absence, seen and unseen. Where do the reeds take you? Editor: They do provide this screen-like quality to it, allowing for some separation between our plane and that of the egrets. It's so muted in tone that it adds to that quality.
