Costas Niarchos created "Iphigenia" using watercolour. The story of Iphigenia from Greek mythology is a tale steeped in themes of sacrifice and duty, where a woman's life is bartered for the perceived greater good of the community. In Niarchos's rendition, we see a figure of the artist's imagining, an Iphigenia rendered in soft, vulnerable watercolors, and a stark contrast to the heroic narratives often associated with Greek mythology. Here, her seated pose and the intimate scale suggest a moment of introspection. Is this Iphigenia before the sacrifice, contemplating her fate? Or is it a reflection on the expectations placed on women throughout history to relinquish their desires for the sake of societal demands? Niarchos invites us to reconsider the narratives we inherit, urging us to find the emotional truths often overshadowed by grand historical gestures.
