Editor: This painting by Robyn Denny features a dominating block of black. It's quite imposing, but I also see hints of colour and texture underneath. What do you see in this piece from a formalist perspective? Curator: Indeed. Notice the interplay between the dominant black form and the subtle chromatic underpainting. The density of the impasto creates a textural contrast with the smooth, untouched areas of the support, inviting a dialogue about surface and depth. Editor: That’s interesting, I hadn’t thought of it that way. Thanks for your insight. Curator: My pleasure. Studying how Denny manipulates these formal elements can reveal much about his artistic intent.
