Sol LeWitt made this piece, Lines in All Directions, and it's a fascinating dance of chaos and order. It's all about process, that idea of setting a rule and letting the artwork emerge from it, like a recipe. Looking closely, you can see how each line has its own life, its own weight, its own little wobble. The colours, primary and grey, create a vibrating surface, a visual hum. There's a real physicality to it; you can almost feel the artist's hand moving, making decisions. The surface is dense, almost impenetrable. Then, suddenly, your eye finds a little pocket of space, a breath of air. LeWitt reminds me a bit of Agnes Martin, in that they both found freedom through limitation, though Agnes created more empty space. Ultimately, this piece celebrates the joy of artmaking as a journey of discovery, one line, one colour, one decision at a time.
