Vilhelm Lundstrom made this drawing of a nude woman, seen from the front, with graphite on paper. The drawing is all about these long, confident, and searching marks. I really feel for Lundstrom here, trying to figure it all out with these blunt lines. Look how he builds the figure out of a series of very economical and straightforward marks. Like he's not trying to be precious, just getting the information down. See how the shading on her right leg, how it suddenly becomes solid, like he was just trying to find the edge and then said, "Okay, that's it." It reminds me a bit of Matisse, who was also all about finding the line that describes the thing, but Lundstrom is rougher, less refined. More like he's wrestling with the form. It's like he's saying, "I'm not sure what this is, but I'm going to keep at it until I figure it out." And in that struggle, something really beautiful emerges. We can see how artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity.
