About this artwork
Vilhelm Lundstrom made this drawing of a seated nude woman with charcoal on paper, and it’s all about the elegance of the line. The marks seem quickly made, confident and pared back. Take a look at the shading on her right leg, it's not about photographic accuracy, instead Lundstrom is trying to give us the essence of the form, its volume and weight. What's interesting is the ambiguity, the marks don't describe the figure in a conventional sense, they create a kind of echo or memory of it. I'm reminded of Matisse's line drawings, in the way that he managed to capture so much with so little. Like Matisse, Lundstrom understood the power of suggestion, the beauty of leaving things unsaid. It reminds us that art isn't about answers, it's about the questions we ask.
