Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this little watercolor landscape on paper. I love how the washes of color blend into each other, it feels like he's chasing after a feeling, or a memory, rather than trying to capture a literal scene. The colors are so muted, mostly grays and greens, but with these tiny pops of blue, especially along the horizon line. It's like he's letting the water do its own thing, letting the pigments mix and mingle in unexpected ways. You can almost feel the dampness in the air, the way the light softens everything. There's a vertical mark that suggests a tree, and it seems to split the composition. It's not precise, it's smudged, like a fleeting thought. This reminds me of Corot, he had a similar way of capturing the mood of a landscape with just a few simple strokes. Ultimately, it's up to you to bring your own feelings to it.
