This photograph titled ‘Verwerken van de tabak’ captures a group of people processing tobacco, but the identity of the photographer remains a mystery. I imagine them working outside in bright sunlight. The photographer, who is unknown to us, had to decide when to release the shutter. I wonder if they wanted to convey the labour taking place or if the camera saw something the photographer didn't know was there? Photography, like painting, is about intention, and even in anonymous works, you can sense an artist's voice trying to come through. This photograph reminds us of the silent conversations artists have across time, each building upon the other's discoveries and inspirations. Making art is an embodied experience; a process that embraces ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
