This rooster weathervane was crafted by an anonymous artist, using painted metal. Roosters have long been symbols of vigilance and are frequently associated with churches, and they serve a practical purpose, indicating wind direction. However, they also signify something deeper. In a society deeply rooted in agriculture, the rooster announces the start of a new day. Its presence on a barn or home can be seen as a connection to the land, a symbol of rural values and the rhythms of nature. This artifact can provide insights into the cultural values and artistic practices prevalent in rural communities. It can also allow us to study the interplay between folk art and industry. You can find examples in publications related to cultural history, social studies, and museum collections. The meaning of this rooster is contingent on its social context and historical background.
Comments
This handmade weathervane perched proudly atop a barn in Red Hook, New York, until it was sold in the 1970s. It is made of pieces cut from sheet copper, riveted and wired together. The original surface was later painted, resulting in the crackling you see today.
