This anonymous rooster weathervane, dating back to c. 1890, is a striking example of folk art. The weathervane is crafted from metal and features intricate cutouts, particularly in the rooster's tail feathers, creating a dynamic silhouette. The vivid red, yellow, and green paint, though faded with age, highlights the rooster's form and adds to the weathervane's charm. This weathervane is not only a functional object but also a testament to the artistry and skill of its anonymous creator, serving as a reminder of the beauty and ingenuity found in everyday objects.
Comments
This handmade weathervane perched proudly atop a barn in Red Hook, New York, until it was sold in the 1970s. It is made of pieces cut from sheet copper, riveted and wired together. The original surface was later painted, resulting in the crackling you see today.
