Johannes Löhr created this print, "Slapend kind," using etching, a process rooted in craft traditions. An etcher carefully applies a waxy, acid-resistant ground to a metal plate, then draws an image, exposing the metal. Acid bites into these lines, creating grooves that hold ink. The plate is then cleaned, inked, and pressed onto paper, transferring the image. Here, the fine lines and tonal variations capture the delicate features of the sleeping child. The texture of the paper and the subtle imperfections in the etching process give the print a unique character. Etching, unlike industrial printing, relies on the artist’s hand, making each print a unique work. By understanding the material process, we appreciate not just the image, but the labor and skill involved. This brings us closer to the artist’s intention and challenges our understanding of craft and fine art.
