Fritz Syberg made this drawing of his daughter Clara, or Nolle, with ink on paper. Look at how Syberg has created depth using marks, moving from sparse lines to dense scribbles to give weight to the top of Nolle’s head. It's so visceral; you can feel the movement of his hand. I imagine Syberg as a doting dad, watching his daughter as she dozes, trying to capture this quiet moment of intimacy. The drawing is so full of life. I mean, look at those marks! The ink is thick, almost sculptural. You can see every stroke, every decision he made. It reminds me of other artists who drew their kids like Paula Modersohn-Becker. I wonder if Syberg was looking at her work, too? Artists are always in conversation, you know, riffing off each other, pushing boundaries, so that drawing isn't just a skill, it's a way of seeing and feeling the world, a place where meaning is always open to interpretation.
