This Miniature Seal, standing just over an inch tall, was crafted in London at the Saint James's Factory sometime between 1749 and 1759. It's a poignant object that encapsulates the complexities of childhood and societal expectations in the 18th century. During this time, childhood was increasingly recognized as a distinct phase of life, yet children of the era were often subjected to rigorous expectations for proper behavior and early development. The seal depicts a child within a walking frame. This frame, intended to aid the child’s mobility, also symbolizes the constraints and control imposed upon them. The delicate craftsmanship contrasts with the harsh realities of child-rearing practices of the time. It invites us to reflect on the balance between care and control in the lives of children, both then and now.
