This roll of grey and rose-edged ribbon in a paper band was made by Gustav Schnitzler. He was not only thinking about textiles but about the relationship between color and texture in everyday things. Here, the ribbed texture catches the light differently on each side of the ribbon, doesn’t it? It’s almost like a painting where the artist has used thick impasto in some areas and thin washes in others. I keep thinking about the subtle color shifts, too. The way the grey interacts with the rose edge, how it all kind of shimmers and vibrates. Look how the artist has framed the ribbon in this simple paper band. It's like a painting, where the frame really affects how you see what's inside. This ribbon reminds me a little of the work of some of the Arte Povera artists. They were really into using humble materials, exploring the beauty in the overlooked. It’s amazing how something so simple can be so visually rich.
