This is a fifteen meter ribbon of cream-colored gauze by Gustav Schnitzler. I wonder what he was thinking when he was making it? Imagine the act of gathering this much material, that soft, gauzy cream – all that fabric folding over itself, like a quiet conversation. Cream is a funny colour. It’s not white, it’s not yellow – it's something in between. I like to think of what it must have felt like to have it running through his fingers, its texture and weight, how it might catch the light. The gauze is semi-transparent, you can see through its layers, creating a soft, diffused effect – a material quality that shifts as your perspective changes. It makes me think about other artists who have explored repetition and accumulation in their work – how the simple act of layering can create depth, texture, and a sense of the infinite. In that sense, this ribbon is like a painting, where the artist is in an ongoing dialogue with materials, history, and the act of creation.
