Johannes Christiaan Bendorp created this etching as a title page for the 1833 edition of the Dutch Muses Almanac. The Almanac, published in Amsterdam, was an annual collection of poetry, prose, and musical scores. But this is more than just a book cover. The image invites us to consider the social role of art. We see a melancholic muse, holding a stringed instrument, seated before a monument adorned with the word “images.” A contemplative Cupid sits nearby. All of this points to the importance of artistic inspiration and its relationship to national identity. In the context of the 1830s, when the Netherlands was still a young kingdom finding its place in Europe after the Napoleonic era, the almanac served as a vehicle for cultural expression. Close examination of the texts included in the almanac, alongside the biographies of its contributors, can help us better understand the intersection of art, nationalism, and social life in the Netherlands.
