Jean Joseph Hanson created this River Landscape etching. Its subdued palette creates a calm yet engaging scene. Hanson employs a structured composition where the river acts as a central band, dividing the artwork horizontally. This division is softened by the reflections and the natural elements overlapping this space. The trees, strategically placed on either side, frame the view, drawing our eye towards the distant buildings. It's interesting how the artist uses line work to define form; short, repetitive strokes build up the texture of the foliage and suggest the movement of the water. Despite the relatively small scale of this etching, Hanson masterfully creates a sense of depth and openness, challenging our perception of space. The landscape invites contemplation.
