Takashi Murakami made "I Recall a Time When My Feet Lifted Off the Ground Ever So Slightly-Korin-Chrysanthemum" with what looks like acrylic paint, or maybe even cel vinyl. The surface is super smooth, kinda like it’s been shrink-wrapped, and the colors are bold, like a poster. Look at how the colors seem to sit right on top, how they glow. And then, there's this under-layer of drippy, messy, splattery marks and dots and digital noise poking through. The balance between flat color and raw expression is quite something. Take the dark silhouette over to the left, for instance. It’s kinda spooky and seems so random. It’s like a glitch in the matrix, but then you notice how it plays off those little drips above. This is Murakami layering realities, I think. He is doing a really unique thing, mixing traditional Japanese art with something that is just out of a computer. Kind of like what Elizabeth Murray did with surrealism in her time.
