Editor: This is Zacharias Dolendo's "Saint Simon," an engraving on a small sheet. I notice Simon is writing, his brow furrowed in concentration. What do you see in this piece, especially considering its historical context? Curator: I see an effort to reclaim knowledge. Given Dolendo's era, post-Reformation, Simon's act of writing becomes a powerful assertion of individual interpretation against established authority. How does his depiction challenge or reinforce existing power structures? Editor: So, the act of writing itself becomes a statement? I hadn't considered that. Thanks! Curator: Precisely. It encourages us to question whose voices are amplified and whose are silenced through the written word, even today.
