This image shows a group of children on a quay in Marken, Netherlands. It's impossible to know when or by whom this image was made but I want to guess. I can imagine the photographer composing the shot, maybe feeling the weight of the camera, the smell of the water, the heat of the sun on their back. The children are standing at the edge of the water, looking down at something we can't quite see. I wonder what they're thinking, what they're feeling. Are they curious? Are they bored? Are they dreaming of sailing away on that little boat? Maybe this image is part of a bigger series or project? Maybe it's part of a long and fascinating conversation about the nature of seeing, about time, about memory. Whatever it is, I'm glad it exists. It makes me feel connected to something larger than myself, something timeless and mysterious.
