Manuel Salvador Carmona created this etching, "Kinderen laten een hond dansen" or "Children letting a dog dance", sometime in the 18th or 19th century. The scene unfolds within a sharply defined rectangular frame, lending a theatrical quality to the composition. Observe how the artist meticulously layers textures and values through hatching and cross-hatching. This technique not only models the figures and their attire, but also orchestrates the light, drawing our eyes to the focal point: the dancing dog. Note how the dog becomes a figure of spectacle. The print engages with themes of leisure, class, and the representation of childhood in the Enlightenment era, but there is an evident tension. What does it mean for children from privileged backgrounds to take pleasure in such displays? In what ways does the image reflect evolving societal norms and intellectual debates?
