Eva Hesse, sometime in the 60's, made this… well, what is it? I see these bulbous, almost pear-like forms, like weird fruit hanging from a vine, all encased in netting. I think she was interested in the tension between interior and exterior, the soft versus the structured. I can imagine her in the studio, feeling the material in her hands, trying to coax it into something that felt both organic and constructed. The texture is key here; the netting creates a kind of visual vibration, a moiré pattern that messes with your eyes. Each little pear is vulnerable, like a little precious thing. Hesse’s work has always been about a kind of precarious beauty, a fragility that feels deeply human. I always see these materials and processes handed down through time, a conversation that is always ongoing.
