This engraving by Adriaen Lommelin, presents us with the Triumph of Divine Love, a parade of potent symbols rendered in ink. Dominating the scene, we see a Cupid-like figure riding a chariot drawn by two lions. The lions, symbols of strength and courage, are tamed here, transformed into beasts of burden by love's power. We see similar motifs in art across time. The lion drawn chariot reminds us of Cybele, the ancient Phrygian goddess, who was also often depicted with lions. The cupid figure, with his bow and arrow, is a direct descendant of Eros from classical antiquity, embodying desire, affection, and erotic love. He represents a force of nature, an untamed urge. But here, he is in control. This symbol engages viewers on a deep, subconscious level, tapping into our primal understanding of emotions, and reminding us that even the wildest aspects of our nature can be transformed. Note how this iconography resurfaces and takes on new meanings in different eras.
