This photograph captures Lord Roberts and British soldiers entering Kroonstad, probably around the time of the Boer War. Think about what it must have been like for the photographer at that time. The artist is an anonymous individual; a person whose name has been lost to history. And yet, even though we don’t know their name, they are a part of a longer history of picture-making. Photography is a tool to help us look closer, but also to reflect on the complexities of human life. As an artist you always ask yourself, how you can create images to not just reveal information, but to question what that information means? Artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. What we can learn from those artists is that meaning emerges through our own individual interpretation.
