Hendrik Oldelandt’s etching presents us with an ‘Old Man in an Armchair,’ immortalized in monochrome. It’s an image of patriarchal authority, a man’s face framed by the white hair, a symbol of wisdom. The chair itself, not merely a seat but a throne of sorts, is not unlike those found in depictions of ancient philosophers. One can see echoes of the seated Buddha or the wise old man, figures revered across cultures. Think of the philosopher kings of antiquity, enthroned and dispensing wisdom. Observe the hands of this elder, resting one upon the other, in a gesture that appears to be a symbol of thoughtfulness, but that at the same time appears frail and aged. It is interesting to consider that the man is holding a clay pipe, a symbol that connects him to earthly pleasures. The symbol of old age appears and reappears, carrying with it both the weight of experience and the vulnerability of mortality. It is through these symbols that we understand the cyclical nature of life.
