Victoria Hutson Huntley made "New York Window" with graphite on paper, and it is just delicious. I love the way the soft curtains frame the geometric buildings, and how the textures create a gentle contrast. Huntley uses many delicate, tiny strokes to build up tone and form. I can imagine her sitting at her own window, watching the light change over these buildings as she painstakingly coaxes this urban landscape out of the page. I find myself drawn to the windows within the window, how they offer a peephole into the interior lives of others and the potential for endless stories. The scene is quiet, yet full of hidden activity, like a stage set before the actors appear. And the light! It streams through the curtains, casting soft shadows and turning the city into a dreamy, almost ethereal space. For me, this drawing is like a conversation between the artist, the city, and, of course, us, the viewers.
