This is a postcard to jonkheer Hendrik Teding van Berkhout, made in 1932 by Herman Heijenbrock. The handwriting is so delicate, like a spider web spun with ink. It’s the kind of writing where each letter seems to dance, a little performance of pen on paper. You can almost feel the scratch of the nib, the way the writer paused, then swooped, creating these elegant, looping forms. I wonder what kind of pen he used? Was it scratchy? And the way the ink pools in certain spots, creating dark little accents… It reminds me of Cy Twombly, who also had this way of making writing feel like drawing, full of energy and emotion. Both understood that art isn't just about what you say, but how you say it. Sometimes, the most beautiful things are the ones that leave a little room for mystery, don't you think?
