This drawing is by Marinus Fuit, and it seems to be a view of a trash can on a boulevard, done with fine lines and cool colours. The sky is a solid block of blue and the composition has a flattened perspective. I find myself wondering what Fuit was thinking when he made this; why this subject? I think about other artists like Jan van Eyck or Morandi, who found beauty in the everyday. In this case, I notice the way the sun hits the trash can, creating a stark shadow that almost mirrors the object itself. I see the shadow like a mirror reflecting back the image. The drawing reminds me that art can be found anywhere, even in the most mundane of places; it can become a site of inquiry for the artist and the viewer. It is like looking at a Cy Twombly painting with just one line. I think about how artists are always in conversation with each other, riffing off of each other’s ideas.
