This is Robert Frank's photographic contact sheet, "Sue Lyons, 'Lolita' 1". Just imagine Frank in the darkroom, coaxing these images into being. I find myself connecting to the granular feel of the film, the directness of the black and white. The pictures show Sue Lyons as Lolita, a young girl lying in the grass next to the American flag. It is a complicated subject, no? Frank does not hide the darks. There's a gritty beauty here, like a well-worn song. Think of other artists like Nan Goldin who find beauty in the everyday, unflinching in their portrayal of life. I wonder if Frank thought of this as an ongoing experiment with his own photographic language. You know, playing with tone and composition. Ultimately, artists keep inspiring one another, and images like these keep the conversation going. They embody how something new can emerge from the depths of the familiar, through a shared visual language.
