This photograph captures a bas-relief on the pendopo, or foundation, of Candi Panataran, and was recorded by Isidore Kinsbergen. The bas-relief illustrates scenes from local myths and legends, and shows the daily life of the Javanese people. Note the recurring motif of the tree. Throughout history, the tree is a symbol for both earthly and cosmic meaning, representing life, growth, and connection between heaven and earth. In this context, the tree of life reminds us of the ever-repeating cycles of nature and existence. Similar symbolic trees feature in numerous cultures—from the Tree of Knowledge in Judeo-Christian traditions to the Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Such continuities suggest how the human mind—both consciously and unconsciously—responds to fundamental aspects of life, death, and renewal. Motifs such as the tree possess an almost archetypal power, engaging our minds on a subconscious level and reflecting our deepest fears and hopes.
