Gezicht op de bibliotheek van de Universiteit van Göttingen 1742 - 1801
Dimensions height 317 mm, width 425 mm
Georg Balthasar Probst created this print of the University of Göttingen library. Notice the formal arrangement of the architectural space which is defined by strong horizontal lines. The receding bookshelves, and the tables for study create a sense of depth, drawing the eye to the back of the room. The composition employs a linear perspective to depict the library's interior. This creates a rational organization of space, typical of the Enlightenment period. However, the muted colors and somewhat flattened perspective also lend a sense of artifice, reminding us that this is a constructed image, not a direct reflection of reality. Here, the formal elements serve to convey the library as a structured and orderly space of learning. At the same time, the somewhat unrealistic rendering challenges the idea of objective representation, highlighting the role of the artist in shaping our perception. This interplay between order and artifice invites a deeper reflection on the nature of knowledge and representation.
