Editor: This watercolor by Reuben Townroe, whose title is unknown, presents a seated figure framed by what looks like a shell. The figure’s solemn expression and the muted colors give it such a thoughtful mood. What do you see in this piece? Curator: The oval frame makes me think of a cameo, a small, precious object meant for contemplation. Townroe may have been playing with ideas of idealized beauty. The seated figure, bathed in a sort of divine light, with the shell above, gives the air of some kind of holy figure, don't you think? Editor: It does now that you mention it! I hadn't considered the religious element. Curator: These classical references were quite popular then. Perhaps Townroe aimed to evoke a sense of timelessness. Editor: Well, that’s something I’ll certainly look for in other works now.
