Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made these chair designs in pencil, on paper. Look at this page full of chairs! It's a whole chorus line of seating possibilities. You can see Cachet working through different ideas, trying out variations on a theme. It’s like he’s thinking aloud with his pencil. He’s exploring what a chair could be, how it could hold us, support us, give us a place to rest. I imagine Cachet at his desk, surrounded by sketches and swatches, dreaming up furniture that’s not just functional, but also beautiful, maybe even a little bit playful. What I like about the drawings is the simplicity of the pencil. I suppose they're both architectural and a little bit folksy too. Artists are always looking at what came before, remixing and reinterpreting ideas in their own way. This drawing is a reminder that art is a conversation, a back-and-forth across time and space.
