Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this design for a piece of furniture with pencil on paper, we don't know exactly when. It is an interesting sketch, just a few lines and you can get the idea of something three-dimensional. It is a strange piece, there are some odd dimensions written in, it makes me think about my own process of making, when I'm working I make a lot of changes, one line is not precious to me, and it seems the same for Cachet. Look at the legs on the right-hand side, one is a simple circle, the other is more elaborate. It is a kind of ‘both/and’ approach to making that I really appreciate, a freedom to experiment and play around. It reminds me of the work of Gustav Klimt, who was a contemporary of Cachet, the same spirit of invention is there. Of course, there are no fixed meanings, but that is the fun of it, let your imagination do the work.
