A. van Goethem made this pair of pumps in two kinds of leather and like all objects they have a history of how they came to be this way, which involves material and process. These are white pumps. And everything is sort of unified, right? Like there's a whole color feeling. You see there's a lot of care put into the surface of these objects. Not a lot of textural incident in a way. And yet, if you look closely, you notice a certain kind of line going on in the craftsmanship of the shoe itself. The way the various elements are stitched together. It's like drawing in a way. And it suggests the hand. These pumps remind me of Meret Oppenheim's shoe hat, though they are far less surreal. They make me think about the potential of fashion to reflect the inner life of the wearer. What kind of statement do these shoes make? Are they for a wedding, for dancing, for everyday use, or for display?
It was not unusual to have the same style of shoe made in different colours. This model was made in dark blue as well as white suede. The decoration, however, differs. The blue pair is trimmed with snakeskin, which also covers the heels; the white pair with patent leather. The date 1937 is written on the shoetrees of the white pumps.
