Raoul Dufy made this piece, titled Pink Bunch, with watercolor on paper. Look at the way he lays down color here; it's so light and airy, like he's just letting the paint dance across the surface. It makes you think about artmaking as a kind of joyful process. The colors aren't quite true to life, are they? He’s using pinks, reds, and blues, outlines in black, all mingling together in this bouquet. It’s almost like he's not trying to replicate reality, but to capture the essence, the feeling of the flowers. Notice the way the paint thins out towards the edges of the flowers. It’s like he’s suggesting form rather than defining it. There’s something almost Matisse-like in its simplicity and Fauvist vibrancy, but it's distinctly Dufy. He's got this way of making it look effortless, but you know there's a lot of skill and intention behind every mark. Art is a conversation across time, full of ambiguity, always open to new interpretations.
