Pavlo Makov made this etching, Neighbourhood #11, and, looking at it, I can't help but think about the act of building, both physical and mental. There are these rows of houses, each identical, yet somehow distinct. The smoke billowing from the chimneys suggests a pulse, a life within each dwelling. I imagine Makov meticulously etching each line, each window, perhaps contemplating the stories contained within those walls. There's a sense of order but also something unsettling in the repetition. It reminds me of Piranesi, but with a melancholic twist. The lines connecting the rows of houses seem to hint at infrastructure, the unseen networks that bind us together. I feel this tension between individuality and collectivity, the desire for home, and the feeling of being trapped. It's as if Makov is not just depicting a neighbourhood, but mapping a state of mind.
