Pavlo Makov made this print, Neighbourhood #11, using etching, and it feels like a study in contrasts, doesn't it? The rigid lines of the buildings meet the wispy smoke, and the geometric structure is set against the organic texture of the paper. Look at the way Makov uses line—it's so precise in the buildings, creating a sense of order and repetition, but then it dissolves into this hazy, almost dreamlike background. The smoke is really interesting because it's so soft and blurred, like a memory fading away. This area makes me think about how we construct our memories of places, how certain details stand out while others become obscured. Makov reminds me of Piranesi, with this mix of architectural detail and surreal atmosphere. Both artists create worlds that are both familiar and unsettling, inviting us to question our perceptions of space and reality.
