Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this drawing, Werklieden op twee boten, with graphite on paper. Looking at it, I imagine Vreedenburgh out on the water, sketchbook in hand, trying to capture the essence of the workers and their boats. There’s a real sense of immediacy, you know? Like he's quickly sketching to capture a fleeting moment. I love the rawness of the lines. They’re not overly precise, but they convey the forms and the activity so well. You can almost feel the rocking of the boats, the movement of the workers. And the use of shading? It gives depth and volume with minimal effort. It reminds me of some of my own sketches. It's like a visual shorthand, a way of quickly noting down impressions and ideas. It’s all about capturing the energy and the feeling of the moment. For me, this piece is about seeing the world with fresh eyes.
