Cornelis Vreedenburgh sketched "Aangemeerde zeilboot aan een kade" with graphite on paper, and you can just feel him thinking through his marks. It’s so straightforward and loose, as though he's trying to get somewhere fast. Looking at the sketch, you can see the artist's hand in the deliberate, almost frantic lines. See how the shading creates depth, especially around the boat? It reminds me that drawing, much like painting, is a process of discovery, not just replication. The texture of the paper peeks through, adding another layer to the story. There’s something very modern about its incompleteness, in the way it feels like a fragment of a larger idea. I can see a reference to Manet in how the artist uses a restricted palette. It’s as if Vreedenburgh is inviting us to complete the picture ourselves. Art isn't about answers, but about possibilities.
