This print of flowering plants by Seiseikyo Ryûshi utilizes the labor-intensive technique of woodblock printing. Known as *ukiyo-e*, this method demanded collaboration between the artist, block carver, printer, and publisher. The image begins as a drawing, which is then transferred to a woodblock, usually cherry. The carver uses specialized tools to meticulously cut away the negative space, leaving the design in relief. Multiple blocks are required for different colors, each demanding precision. Once the blocks are prepared, the printer applies water-based inks, pressing paper onto the block to transfer the image. The result is a layered effect, where each color interacts with the others. The flat, graphic style and subtle gradations speak to the skill involved. Understanding the intensive processes behind this print, and the many hands involved in its making, adds depth to our appreciation, and challenges any assumptions about the divide between craft and art.
