This landscape drawing, whose author and date are unknown, is rendered in pen on paper. It’s a scene populated by anonymous figures, and it reminds me of how so much of history obscures the lives of everyday people. We see people going about their lives. Some are seated on a hillside while others walk along a path toward a building, perhaps a church. I am drawn to consider that the identity of the artist remains unknown. Perhaps they weren't recognized by the dominant artistic institutions of their time because of their gender, race, or class. This leads me to wonder about the identities and stories of the people who lived in this landscape. There is a deep sense of longing in this image. It prompts us to consider the countless stories that remain untold and the many contributions that have gone unrecognized throughout history. It reminds us of the importance of seeking out diverse voices and perspectives to gain a more complete understanding of our shared human experience.
