Alfred Hubert’s "Landschap met twee jagers" (Landscape with two hunters) is an etching made with metal and acid, dating from the late 19th century. The controlled corrosion of the metal plate allowed Hubert to create fine lines and intricate details of the depicted landscape. This was a reproductive medium, capable of producing multiple impressions of the same image. Etching allowed for the wide distribution of art to a growing middle class. Consider the way the etched lines define form, create shadow, and generate texture within the image. These techniques evoke a sense of depth and atmosphere. Each print pulled from the plate bears the marks of labor, a collaboration between the artist and the material itself. Hubert was no doubt aware of the tension between the industrial means of production and the pastoral subject matter, and invites us to consider the relationship between art, industry, and society.
