Johannes Vogelaar made this print of a farm hut, using an etching technique that feels immediate and tactile. The marks are so close together, they're like whispers on paper. I can imagine Vogelaar outside, buffeted by the wind, squinting at the light, his hand moving quickly to capture the feeling of this solid, simple structure amidst the wild grass. I wonder if he was thinking about other artists, like Rembrandt, who found such beauty in ordinary scenes. Or maybe he was just trying to get it down, to nail that feeling of being small in a big world. See how the lines around the hut seem to vibrate? It’s like the building is breathing, alive. Artists are always talking to each other, across time and space, using marks and materials as their language. And we, as viewers, get to eavesdrop on the conversation.
