Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki created this print, "Praying Churchgoers," sometime in the late 18th century, using etching. Here, the artist offers a glimpse into the social dynamics within a church setting. Notice the contrast between the elaborately dressed woman kneeling prominently and the more humbly attired figures around her. Those in the balcony also seem to be set apart by their status. Chodowiecki, working in the Enlightenment era, was keenly aware of social stratification and the ways in which institutions, like the church, could reflect and reinforce those divisions.
