This black and white photograph, Echtpaar Jetten met gasten op een rivierboot, captures a moment in time, a float down the river, sometime in the early 20th century maybe? The image seems to emerge from a sea of gray tones, and in terms of mark making, well, photography is all about capturing light, so the ‘marks’ here are really about how light and shadow define form and space. The material quality of the photograph – its slightly faded, grainy texture - adds to its sense of nostalgia. The light is diffused, creating a soft, dreamy atmosphere. Look at the way the women's dresses drape and fold, each fold rendered in subtle gradations of gray. The way the light catches the brim of their hats, creating a halo effect is quite lovely. It’s amazing how the photographer makes the most of the limited palette to evoke a sense of place, mood, and atmosphere. This photograph reminds me a little of Gertrude Käsebier's Pictorialist images. Both artists create images that are less about capturing reality and more about evoking a feeling or mood, embracing ambiguity and interpretation over clarity and precision.
