Alfred Freddy Krupa made this work, Ukraine 2022, with ink on paper. Look at these dominant gestural marks and monochrome palette! I can just imagine the act of painting itself—how this artwork must have come into being, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. I sympathize with Krupa and can imagine what it might have been like to create this. What was he thinking when he made it? The ink is washy and thin in places, thick and built up in others. A single gesture communicates a lot: intention, certainly, maybe even grief. It reminds me a bit of the work of Franz Kline, but with a narrative element. Ultimately, artists are in an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting is, after all, a form of embodied expression which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
