This is a lead guild badge made by an anonymous artist for the St. Jansgilde of Zierikzee. The guild's coat of arms, prominently displayed, features symbols laden with meaning. Look closely, and you’ll notice motifs of chalices, associated with Saint John the Baptist, patron saint of the guild, and the act of communion. Now, consider how these symbols resonate across time. The chalice, for instance, extends back to ancient rituals involving sacred vessels. It resurfaces during the Middle Ages in Grail legends, and again here, repurposed within a specific social order. Note, too, the emotional power inherent in these symbols. The chalice, a vessel of life and transformation, evokes deep-seated feelings of spirituality and communal identity. The image of the guild members conveys a sense of brotherhood, protection, and belonging. These symbols have continually reappeared, evolving in meaning, yet retaining their capacity to touch our collective memory. They remind us that images are never truly static.
