Sadamasa Motonaga made 'White Light Seems To Be Coming Out' using printmaking techniques, but I can't tell you exactly when. The way Motonaga blends the colors, it's almost like he's painting with light itself. Looking closely at the lower part of the shape, you can see how the yellow morphs into brown. There is an incredible sense of depth; it’s like watching the sun rise over a distant hill, or maybe a weird, otherworldly sunset. This kind of subtle gradation is very hard to pull off in printmaking. The gradient is not just about color, but also about feeling, moving from grounded earth tones to a lighter, ethereal realm. Motonaga was a core member of the Gutai group in Japan, who were all about exploring materials and processes, and you see that in the way he creates ambiguity. It's got a bit of that Rothko vibe with its big blocks of color, but also something uniquely its own. This work reminds us that art is about looking, feeling, and thinking – not necessarily in that order!
