Editor: So, this is Robert Mapplethorpe's photograph of Diane Benson. It's stark, black and white. That sculptural hair and dramatic coat—it's almost theatrical. What do you make of it? Curator: The composition, that profile, it’s pure drama, isn't it? It feels like a study in contrasts: soft skin against bold forms, organic shapes and hard edges. Do you think it's about power, or vulnerability, or maybe both? Editor: I hadn't thought about vulnerability, but I think I see it. Thanks! Curator: Photography, especially Mapplethorpe’s, makes us look harder, doesn’t it? Always something new to see.
