This photograph of S.O. Goenoengsari was taken on February 4th, 1927, by an anonymous photographer. I think of the photographer, with their camera, finding this scene of stored installation parts for the railway. Maybe they were thinking about industry and progress, or maybe they were just struck by the patterns of the tanks and the little houses. The photograph is a document, but it's also a way of seeing. The photographer chose this view, this moment, and that choice tells us something. The grey scale flattens everything, but it also makes the textures stand out, like the rough surfaces of the tanks and the neat rows of roofs. It’s like they were in conversation with other photographers of their time, building on a visual language, adding their own voice. It's a reminder that every picture is part of a bigger conversation, a way of seeing that builds on what came before. There's so much ambiguity, and that's what makes it interesting.
